Refinery House in Chilliwack hosted their one-year birthday bash last weekend. To celebrate, they partnered with Himalayan Life to bring the community together for a good cause: to raise enough money to build a school in Nepal.

Have you heard of the Refinery House on Vedder Road?  At first glance, I thought it was just a hair salon. Upon closer inspection, however, I realized this studio is actually a health & beauty haven. From hair and makeup, to physiotherapy and midwifery, they’ve got a girl covered head to toe, inside and out.

I love market season, maybe because I’m not crafty. At all. I have a deep sense of respect and admiration for things people create with their imagination & their hands. I also love meeting the makers themselves and hearing the stories about how & why they create their goods. I’ve always enjoyed taking my son to wander around craft fairs and artisan markets to discover unexpected treasures. One thing’s for sure—we never leave a market empty handed and I feel good knowing we’ve supported our local economy & community.

Saturdays are host to free community yoga classes at Studio B Yoga in Garrison Crossing. I picked the perfect rainy Saturday to check it out.

It was grey, rainy, wet, and cold outside. But the warmth of Studio B Yoga in Garrison Crossing had me feeling right at home. Such a perfect day to peel off a cozy cardigan and get comfy on your yoga mat. Inhaling the scent of lavender, pine and patchouli from my mat, I sat in the quiet studio listening to the murmur of other students and the rain trickling down outside.

If you’re a blogger or a mom active on social media, you’re likely to have heard of Heydy Lopez. Since launching her blog Raising Jay & Abel back in April 2015, this mom of three seems to have it all figured out. From working a full-time job as a legal administrative assistant, raising three boys, and running a successful blog, there is no telling what this powerhouse is up to next.

From mason jars to bottles to their very own brewhouse offering locally made ‘booch on tap – Royals Kombucha has really come a long way in offering tasty health beverages to the community.

So what is kombucha?

Kombucha is basically fermented tea. Something called a SCOBY (symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast) makes all the magic happen. A SCOBY holds the (healthy) bacteria and yeast that help transform tea and fruit into a fizzy, delicious, healthy drink that does wonders for your gut health!

One of Surrey’s hottest fashion boutiques recently appeared in Abbotsford. Muse Social Fashion House hosted a pop-up shop at High Street until Sunday, September 17th. If you couldn’t make it, don’t worry – it’s more than worth the trip out to Surrey to visit them!

Upon first entry to the shop, I was immediately in awe of the beauty of the layout. Seriously… I wanted to live in this place. The rustic wood flooring paired with the floral decals on crisp white walls was heavenly. I don’t know how this is possible, but the mix of florals, faux-fur shag rugs, and raw wooden furniture matched so wonderfully.

Supporting small businesses can literally be a walk in the park. The 2nd annual Made in the Valley artisan market in the park was held on Saturday, September 16th outside in Watson Glen Park. I’m pretty sure it was also the last sunny, summer day before fall really made its’ appearance!

Loving Local is a business that supports small shops and local makers, and puts together local markets like the Made in the Valley market. Admission to this awesome array of local small shops was a donation to the Salvation Army in support of the recent wildfires tearing across the province.

It’s that time of the year again!  Parents are happy, the kids….probably not quite as much!

The obvious shopping trips have been happening, choosing a new backpack, pencils, paper, binders and books! You’ve made sure you have just the right back to school outfit and shoes for the little ones…. You’ve bought new dorm and apartment furniture for the kids heading off to university and college.  These things might be checked off your to-do list, but what about preparing the car that is going to haul all those care packages off to university, and the car that will be driving back and forth to school and dropping off the kids and their friends to after school activities and events?  The driving can be endless it seems during the school year and much of it occurs through busy neighborhoods and school zones.  This means that regular maintenance of your vehicle for safety and reliability is even more important than usual!
